Accessibility for visitors
The Hamburger Kunsthalle views it as a matter of course to provide all visitors with access to artworks and events.
Visitors with reduced mobility can be assured of wheelchair-friendly access to all collection and exhibition galleries as well as the event spaces, The Cube restaurant and Das Liebermann café. Toilets for visitors with disabilities are located in both the Lichtwark-Galerie and the Galerie der Gegenwart. Wheelchairs are also available free of charge. If required, please reserve one by calling customer relations.
Parking spaces for people with reduced mobility can be found at the entrance behind the Galerie der Gegenwart in front of the railroad crossing (free of charge) and in the underground car park of the Galerie der Gegenwart (subject to a charge).
FAQs on visitor accessibility
- Admission fee
Upon presentation of a disability card, you will be charged the reduced admission fee of €8 for both the permanent collection and special exhibitions. Your registered companion will be admitted free of charge to the permanent collection and special exhibition.
- Architecture
The Hamburger Kunsthalle comprises three large buildings: the Lichtwark-Galerie with its two heritage buildings (one in grey shell limestone and one in brick) and the Galerie der Gegenwart (white cube). The permanent collection and exhibition galleries are spread across the three buildings on several storeys, all accessible by elevator.
- Assistance dogs
Upon presenting a certificate, assistance dogs are permitted to accompany visitors viewing the permanent collection and exhibition galleries. Pre-registration is not required.
- Directions by public transport
The Hamburger Kunsthalle is located right next to the main station in the centre of Hamburg. It is very easy to reach via public transport.
Note on the HVV app
In the HVV (Hamburg public transport) app, you can enter mobility details under “Options”, for example that you are in a wheelchair. For current information on available elevators, see the bus stop overview: hvv - Haltestellen
- Directions by car
From the A1, A7 or A24, follow signs towards the city centre. The Hamburger Kunsthalle is located right next to the main station.
A paid car park is located underneath the Galerie der Gegenwart, with an entrance at Ferdinandstor (max. height 1.95 m).- Doors
The doors at the Hamburger Kunsthalle are wide enough for a wheelchair, and all steps and landings are level. The doors at the main entrance can be opened automatically using the door opener opposite the elevator, to the right of the motorised entrance door.
- Elevators
The historical external staircase offers an elevator that leads directly to the motorised entrance door. All other floors can be reached via various passenger elevators. See site plans.
- Guided tours
The Hamburger Kunsthalle’s art education programme is designed for a diverse audience. We regularly offer accessible guided tours, for example PERCEIVING ART DIFFERENTLY: Dialogue-based guided tours for people with and without visual impairments, guided tours in German Sign Language (DGS), QUIET HOUR and BEI ANRUF KULTUR (CALL FOR CULTURE).
- Parking facilities
In the Ferdinandstor car park, directly underneath the Galerie der Gegenwart, there are paid parking spaces (max. height 1.95 m).
An elevator leads directly from the underground car park to the foyer of the Galerie der Gegenwart. We also offer two designated disabled parking spaces near the supplier entrance at Ferdinandstor. Access is from Ferdinandstor; the barrier will be opened by security staff.
Due to a major construction site at Ferdinandstor, access is currently only possible via the Außenalster (Outer Alster Lake).
- Toilets
Both the Lichtwark-Galerie in the heritage building and the Galerie der Gegenwart (white cube) have special disabled toilets equipped with an alarm system.
- Wheelchairs & stools
Do you need a wheelchair? Please contact the Customer Relations department. Wheelchairs can be borrowed free of charge for your museum visit.
You may of course bring canes, crutches or walkers with you. However, hiking poles are not permitted in the museum.
To be able to rest during your visit, we recommend borrowing our free portable stools. Please ask our visitor service.
